Italian Tomato Sauce

Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 50 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 32 ounces whole tomatoes, undrained
  • 16 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil or 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano or 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Recipe

  • 1 .heat oil in 3-quart saucepan over medium heat.
  • 2 cook onion, bell pepper, and garlic in oil about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 3 stir in remaining ingredients, breaking up tomatoes.
  • 4 heat to boiling and reduce heat to low.
  • 5 cover and simmer 45 minutes.
  • 6 serve with meat loaf, meatballs, or over hot cooked pasta.
